More about signs of appendicitis

The most common complications of appendicitis are abscess and peritonitis.
Although signs of appendicitis vary widely among children, parents should contact a doctor immediately if they think that their child has appendicitis. When the appendix is blocked, it becomes inflamed and results in a condition termed appendicitis. You may feel the pain somewhere other than the typical spot.
If the pain doesn’t go away after four hours, call a doctor. Some health care providers use ultrasound to check whether the appendix is inflamed (and to rule out ovarian cysts or ectopic pregnancy in women). On plain radiographic films, the presence of an appendicolith is the most specific sign, but it is rarely observed. The stomach pain usually worsens and moves to the lower right side of the belly.
